/ 16" x 20" / acrylic on canvas / 2016
This painting started with a faulty cheap tube of acrylic paint. I needed some purple and found an old tube in the bottom of a box, and oh crap... the binder had somehow dried into a big chunk in the middle while dark violet pigment was sloshing around in there the consistency of ink. Inspiration struck and I needed a break from the painting I was already working on anyway, so I grabbed a fresh canvas and used the dark liquid to make some spur of the moment lines and splotches on the canvas, which I then let drip down.
When this dried, I had a great foundation to add in some blocks and shapes of solid color.
And, as per usual, I couldn't stop until most of the white space was gone.
With the first layer down, I added in colored stripes and mapped out patterns.
I completed the piece with glossy black lines.
It's been a long while since I painted something so improvised and in the moment. It was a wonderful experience and I look forward to doing it again soon!
